MJML turns a simple markup language into responsive HTML email, usually with a Node toolchain doing the work behind it. We ported it to PHP end to end: php-mjml/php-mjml needs no Node.js, no second runtime in the deployment. It has rendered this website's emails since February; as of this week it's open under the MIT licence for anyone to use.
Our stack is Symfony and PHP, our emails are MJML templates. We didn't want to run a Node process alongside the PHP deployment just to translate markup into HTML. So now there's a native PHP implementation instead: App\Mail\MjmlRenderer in this very project is built directly on it.
php-mjml parses with an XML parser rather than an HTML one, so self-closing MJML elements are handled correctly. It covers 20-plus email components: text, buttons, images, carousels, accordions and more. Content from untrusted sources gets built-in sanitisation.
composer require php-mjml/php-mjmlVersion 0.1.0 shipped on 1 September, and Packagist already counts more than 8,500 installs. The repository itself still calls itself "work in progress" and warns the API may change – honestly, it has run in production for us for months regardless, and we haven't missed anything for it.
