ARD/ZDF media study: AI tools have arrived, but people still want to check the output

59 percent of people in Germany aged 14 and over use AI tools at least occasionally, according to the ARD/ZDF media study 2026. Among 14- to 29-year-olds the figure is 92 percent, among those over 70 just 15. Hardly anyone trusts the tools blindly, though: 54 percent see them as instruments whose output has to be checked when in doubt. 81 percent consider source attribution important or very important, yet only 43 percent of users find the sources behind AI tools transparent.

Our take: the study answers a question that comes up in every AI project – how much automation people are willing to hand to an AI. They already use it; they just want to keep the final say. That is why we build systems in which the machine proposes, shows its sources, and a person approves. Not out of excess caution, but because that is what users expect.

php-mjml is open source: our MJML renderer for PHP

MJML turns a simple markup language into responsive HTML email, usually with a Node toolchain doing the work behind it. We ported it to PHP end to end: php-mjml/php-mjml needs no Node.js, no second runtime in the deployment. It has rendered this website's emails since February; as of this week it's open under the MIT licence for anyone to use.
