Gemini 4 Argon: ahead on most benchmarks, at half price for now

Google has released Gemini 4 Argon, a model for large software projects, research and cybersecurity. Google's own benchmarks mostly put it in front: 68.9 percent on the Vals Index, just ahead of Claude Opus 5.5 (67.0), and 77.9 percent on DeepSWE, ahead of GPT-6 Astra (74.1). The gap is widest on long contexts, where GraphWalks shows 84.2 against 71.8 percent. On the command line Argon falls behind: Terminal-Bench 4.0 has it at 57.4 percent, Opus 5.5 at 66.4.

Until 30 November, the API charges $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, half the price of Opus 5.5. From 1 December the price doubles to $4 and $20, level with Opus. On Hacker News, where the announcement drew more than 800 comments within a day, many praise the writing above all: Argon answers more clearly and directly than its rivals. For agentic coding, though, many still rate Claude Code higher.

Mistral Large 4: Europe's answer to the frontier models

Mistral released Large 4 as a public preview today. It is a 1.05-trillion-parameter Mixture-of-Experts model with 49B active parameters, text and vision input and a one-million-token context window. Mistral trained it from scratch on 3,800 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs in its own European datacenters and runs it there, end to end, under European law. The weights are due as open weights by the end of October.

It doesn't quite match the leading US models, but if you need your data and your provider to stay in Europe, it is the first serious option at this size.
